The Shearwater Terminal is a lifeline for North and Central Coast communities in British Columbia, supporting year-round travel for residents, visitors, and businesses across the region.
As part of BC Ferries’ investment in modernizing this essential route, Pacific Marine Construction completed a 63’ × 50’6” × 9’6” engineered concrete berthing dock in 2024, fabricated in partnership with Pacific Industrial & Marine Ltd. for installation at the terminal in Shearwater, B.C.
Built at our Campbell River facilities and delivered fully outfitted for marine integration, the new dock provides a robust platform designed to support upgraded berthing operations and future improvements.
The Shearwater Terminal underwent significant upgrades to improve safety, vessel interface, and reliability for coastal travelers. As part of this work, new berth structures (including a redesigned ramp system and concrete pontoon elements) help accommodate higher load ratings and streamline vessel operations.
PMC’s completed berthing dock provides:
- A stable, durable platform for vessel berthing
- Increased load-handling capability
- Reinforced structural interfaces for fendering and mooring
- Infrastructure aligned with future ramp and terminal upgrades
The dock enhances the long-term resilience of one of the most remote marine terminals in the BC Ferries network.
Fabricated and completed in 2024, the berthing dock was constructed using marine-grade reinforced concrete and steel embeds. The structure was engineered to withstand Central Coast marine conditions, ensuring long-term stability in an operating area exposed to tidal forces, wave activity, and vessel impact.
Working closely with Pacific Industrial & Marine Ltd., PMC supplied and installed all structural components including galvanized bollards, pile retainers, and steel interfaces, before floating the dock from Vancouver Island to the site for integration with BC Ferries’ marine fendering system and terminal infrastructure.
- 3,181.5 sq ft engineered concrete deck surface
- 6” reinforced concrete bottom
- Four 30T galvanized bollards (supplied & installed)
- One galvanized external pile retainer (supplied & installed)
- All fabricated steel embeds supplied & installed
- Installation of BC Ferries–supplied marine fendering
Now in service at the Shearwater Terminal, the completed berthing dock reflects PMC’s capability to deliver high-performance marine infrastructure for remote, weather-exposed coastal environments.
As BC Ferries continues strengthening essential transportation routes across British Columbia, PMC is proud to contribute engineered solutions that support safer travel and stronger connections for the communities that rely on them.
